Underground Gas Storage Monitoring with Optical Fiber Technology
Paulsson, in collaboration with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), has implemented cutting-edge optical fiber technology to monitor the McDonald Island Underground Gas Storage (UGS) field. Utilizing Enhanced Distributed Acoustic Sensor (EDAS) and Distributed Temperature Sensor (DTS) arrays, we can gather real-time data from deep underground, providing a more accurate and sensitive method for tracking gas storage operations. This innovative approach not only enhances the safety and efficiency of gas storage but also positions PI at the forefront of underground storage monitoring technologies.

PIONEERING THE FUTURE OF PIPELINE SAFETY
PG&E, in partnership with Paulsson Inc., is revolutionizing pipeline safety in seismic-prone areas of Central and Northern California. Leveraging a PHMSA grant. Paulsson installed our innovative distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technologies on gas transmission pipelines. This innovative approach enables accurate, real-time inspection and monitoring of pipeline operations including strain, temperature and acoustics without the need for costly excavations. Originating from a successful small-scale trial on the Hayward Fault, the technologies have now been expanded to a major installation over the Calaveras Fault near Gilroy, completed in June 2023. This initiative marks a significant advancement in ensuring pipeline integrity and safety, showcasing Paulsson Inc.'s pivotal role in pioneering seismic monitoring solutions for the oil and gas industry.
